Martin Waller

Governor of the Board

In our recent OFSTED inspection we were judged to be making significant progress within our leadership and governance and in the run up to our next inspection we are looking to grow our governance board and the level of expertise and critique. We’re looking for people at the top of their game, real experience of either business growth and performance or high level expertise within the further education sector. Additionally, if you’re from within the construction, retrofit, manufacturing or logistics sector at a high level were happy to hear from you.

What is a further education governor?

In our training provision we deliver up and down the country and make significant impact of the people we deliver to, both in terms of raising their confidence, providing training and qualifications and getting them in front of an employer for an interview and actually working and making an income. The benefits are so high but there is also so much can wrong if its allowed to and not monitored adequately.

As a Governor who sits on our governing board. Together with other governors and senior leaders, they help shape strategy, monitor performance, and make sure the staff power training is serving its students and community effectively. Think of it as being part of the companies ‘critical friend’ group, supporting, but also challenging, to help us succeed. Using your experiences and expertise gained, we look for your challenge, your creative suggestions, your ability to analyse data and identify trends and your ability to work in a team of like minded individuals of supporting us in achieving our aspirations of being an exceptional provider and providing exceptional impact on our learners.

What will you actually do?

As a Governor, you can expect to:

· Set the strategic direction and organisational culture by agreeing on the long-term goals for the company, establishing an agreed-upon vision and mission, and aligning the organisational values that governors, staff and students will be expected to uphold.

· Oversee financial health: ensuring resources are used wisely, that budgets are balanced, and that Staf Power Training, viewed through

a business lens, maximises the resources at its disposal to help students achieve positive outcomes and to make staff feel valued for their contributions.

· Monitor quality and outcomes: asking the right questions about teaching standards, student experience, continuous improvement and the progression of both students and staff.

· Ensure legal and regulatory compliance: ensuring the company remains compliant with all statutory duties, including financial reporting, safeguarding, equality and other relevant requirements.

· Champion the community’s needs: ensuring that Staff Power Training remains relevant to local employers, industries, and learners, and evolves in response to regional and national trends.

· An ambassador: using your own platforms and networks to help develop the reputation of Staff Power Training to gain greater local and national recognition for the outcomes it achieves for its students

Something you certainly won’t be doing is running the day-to-day operations — the senior leadership team and the wider staff team take care of that, However, through your role, you will help hold these people to account whilst also supporting their work and celebrating their achievements.

What skills or background do you need?

There’s no one ‘ideal’ background. our board deeply value a diverse mix of experience, knowledge, and lived experience. Diversity of thought and perspectives is vital to a healthy and productive governing body.

You might bring:

· Professional qualifications & expertise (finance, HR, law, marketing, digital, etc.)

· Industry knowledge in sectors we serves which is currently manufacturing, logistics, construction and retrofit

· Community insight and lived experience

· Further education experience, particularly at senior leader level or OFSTED

Most importantly, you’ll need curiosity, commitment, the confidence to ask questions, challenge and be completely confident with targets setting and review.

What’s the time commitment?

We have 4 governance meetings a year, typically they last for 3 hours and then you have time prior to that where you would be provided with the information being presented within the governance meeting from the senior leadership team.

There may also be occasional time where your asked to come in to do learning walks to look at our provision or attend training in areas like safeguarding or inclusion.

Is this a paid position?

Yes we pay a day or half day rate for the time you commit to this role, more details on this rate will be discussed in your initial meeting.
